Take your family when studying in the UK

Did you know that if you have dependent family members who need to come with to the UK when you leave to study, they can?

Dependants are classed as:

  • Wife/husband
  • Civil partner (you and your partner must be 18+ the day you arrive in the UK)
  • Partner of the same sex (must have lived together for two years)
  • Child/children (must be younger than 18 years old when arriving in the UK)

You can only bring your child/children if your partner is also coming to the UK with you. In certain cases, exception is allowed. For instance, if:
  • You’re the only parent
  • You have the sole responsibility of your child/children
  • If your partner cannot come and live with you due to serious illness or other compelling reasons

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria can be very straight forward if you are a student coming to study in the UK and:
  • You are pursuing postgraduate degree for twelve months or more
  • You are fully sponsored by your government to study for six months or more

Cost:

  • Application fee (£322): For each dependent, the application fee is £322. It’s important that you and your dependents apply at the same time you apply for Tier 4 visa, or after you receive your Tier 4 visa.
  • Health Surcharge (£150): The Immigration Health Surcharge is mandatory for each applicant and is paid for the whole year. It is calculated based on the length of stay. If you are studying for a period of two years, you’ll pay £300.
  • Maintenance fee (£865): After the application fee and health surcharge is paid, you must pay an additional £865 for each dependent per month or a £7,785 maximum, which is the sum for nine months.

Why Indian students should study in Scotland?

Famous for its hospitality and warmth, Scotland is an important part of the UK and a preferred country for many international students planning to study abroad. But what makes Scotland such a popular destination? Stuart Easter, International officer for the University of Edinburgh, recently spoke to The Hindu (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-educationplus/the-scotland-attraction/article7906149.ece) in an exclusive interview to demonstrate why Indian students should study in Scotland and here are just a snippet of the reasons why.

Indian students
There are 1490 Indian students currently studying in Scotland and over the last two years there has been a 14% increase alone of students choosing to study in Edinburgh.
Most Indian students in Scotland choose to study business, engineering, medicine and computer science, while Scottish universities are also well-renowned for their research, producing nearly 1% of global research output.
Scholarships
The Scottish government runs the Saltire Scholarship scheme for mainly Indian, Canadian, US and Chinese students. This offers generous financial support of up to £2,000 for 200 students each year. All universities also run their own scholarship schemes as well.
Transition from India to Scotland
When arriving at a Scottish university, Indian students will take part in orientation events which will familiarise themselves with the university and also their fellow new students. The transition is further eased by ensuring oversees students are guaranteed a place in on campus accommodation.
End result
Many graduates return to India finding themselves highly employable with the skills they have learned. The graduate employment ratio of 91% is excellent for students looking for opportunities in Scotland itself.

International graduates name studying in the UK better than other nations for student satisfaction

Research from the UK Higher Education International Unit has revealed that a large proportion of overseas students in the UK would recommend studying in the UK, as opposed to other nations. 85% of overseas graduates recommend the experience to others, a higher proportion than other traditional heavyweights such as Australia, Canada and the US.
The UK also improved upon its student satisfaction score, up from 90% in 2008 to 91% in 2015. The findings are based on feedback from over 365,000 international students studying outside their home country, which was collected from i-graduate’s International Student Barometer.
UK HE International Unit director Vivienne Stern said: “While the UK’s improving results and higher satisfaction with the cost of living than main alternative countries suggest we are heading in the right direction, we cannot remain complacent. Other countries are increasing their efforts to attract international students and are enjoying faster growth. The UK must jointly capitalise on its obvious strengths in order to drive sustained growth for this critical component of the UK’s higher education system and its broader economy.”
Responses from international undergraduate students in the UK during their first year of study found that the main factors underpinning their decision to study in the UK were the reputation of their selected institution, the specific course of study, earning potential and personal safety.
