Why Indian Students are more stressed than ever?

A growing problem not only in India but all over the globe, students are more stressed than ever. In fact, India has one of the highest rate of suicides among people aged between 15 and 29. Although the reasons are myriad, but failure in examination, unemployment, and depression are some the reasons why people put their life at risk.

A common cause of concern is the pressure from parents to do well in the class XII board exams. There have been many incidents in the past where students have committed suicide during exams, and on the result day. But what can be so extreme that students decide to end their life?

The Psychologists suggest that students suffer from anxiety, and traumatic disorder relating to fear of examination. The fear factor is the reason why students suffer from anxiety, depression, and the following consequences. And the fear not only comes from the school, but also from parents, who go to extreme levels to push their children into getting better grades.

The best time of the life that students are supposed to enjoy and cherish, is the time they are pushed to extreme levels which can be overwhelming for many.

Let’s look at the main problems in our culture:

Indian Education System: Time and time again many complaints have been made against the Indian education system which is more inclined towards memorization and takes long systematic study hours. Leaving less time for recreational activities, and socialization which is an essential part of the development of a child.

The performance of a student’s 12th grade determine’s the choice of college or university they’ll get admission in. Students from science stream goes into further stress by giving entrance exams for different universities and colleges. And the competition is fierce.

Pressure from parents and school: Fear of failure to do well in studies is causing anxiety among students which has substantial negative effects on their academic, and social success. The self worth of student is determined by the academic success and grades, and not on the basis of individual qualities they already do possess. Parents try to get rid of cable connection, internet, computer, only so that their children could concentrate and get better grades.

In a recent survey, two-third (66%) students reported that their parents pressurize them for better academic performance, and the pressure from non-graduate parents was more compared to parents those were graduates and post graduates.

Everyday, 6.23 students commit suicide due to the peer pressure, their must be something wrong that we are not understanding.

The emphasis is so much so on the better grades, that students forget the fun element in learning. Anything can be made interesting if taught well, so it’s not only the students who under perform, teachers under perform too. Sadly, there’s no criteria to judge the grades of a teacher. More than 50% 12th students admitted of having more than 3 private tutors. Why are you paying schools such high tuition fees if eventually the students are going to study from private tutors?

How to help students get rid of stress?
Everyone learns differently, and students could develop their own plans on how to study for long hours effectively, and parents and teachers could help them develop their own learning methods.

With starting of boards examination, what every parents should know is. it’s just exams, not the end of the world. The success of someone lies in what they chose to do with their resources, and the actions they take, and not on the grades.

What are the alternatives for Indian students?
With limited colleges seats, and high number of students applying to get into the top universities and colleges, it could be difficult to get into the top college. The students who cannot get in can always study abroad in UK, or other countries who are more than ready to welcome international students.

Easier to take admission into a top foreign university than Delhi University

With cut-offs reaching soaring high, and number of students on the constant rise, and limited college seats. Students in Delhi are constantly searching for foreign universities, to get admission into a top college globally. Cut-off in top Delhi University colleges goes as high as 98%, last year first cut-off at SRCC for B.Com(H) was 97.37 and 98.25 for Economics.

Students who score 90% are not even sure if they’ll get into a top college or not. The fear of missing out on high quality education is making parents think about getting their children an early seat in top colleges like Imperial College London or London School of Economics, some try to get into Oxford for Economics. After the chinese, Indian students make up for the second highest number of international students in foreign univeristies.

Earlier, it was only the students from the wealthier family who could afford to visit a foreign university. But due to the availability of students loans, and reduction of course duration in UK, and other cheaper alternatives, more than 5 lakh Indian students go abraod every year for higher education.

UK the top destination for international Nobel Prize winners

The UK is the number one destination for international students who have gone on to become Nobel Prize winners, a study by the British Council shows.

Research revealed today shows that in the whole history of the awards, 38% of those who studied overseas chose the UK as their destination, more than any other country.

This week will see the winners announced for the 2015 awards.

Nobel by numbers

860 individual Nobel Prize winners (since 1901)
131 international student winners
50 UK international student winners
91 UK Nobel Prize winners

Set up in 1901, the Nobel Awards are internationally recognised as the ultimate honour for people who make outstanding contributions in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine or Physiology, Literature, Peace and Economics.

Since then, 131 of the 860 individual 'Nobel Laureates' (winners) have been international students – students who studied in a different country from the one they were born in for some or all of their higher education. Out of those 131, 50 studied in the UK.

This means the UK has the largest share of international student graduates on the Nobel Prize list. Next highest was the USA, where 28% international student winners studied, and 18% who studied in Germany.

The most common Nobel Prize for UK international student alumni was Medicine or Physiology, with 17 winners. Eight UK alumni won prizes for Physics, eight for Chemistry, seven for Economics, five for Literature and five for Peace.

Randy Schekman, an American student who spent his third year at the University of Edinburgh, was the most recent former UK international student to win the award. He was given the 2013 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work in cell biology.

There have also been 91 British winners of the prize since 1901.

Job opportunities for Indian students after postgraduation in the UK

I came to study the MSc in Finance course at the London School of Economics. Found an internship at an investment bank and then started as a Grad the same year. It’s been four years since I moved to London and three years since I started working. I’ll try to answer this as best as I can. Yes, opportunities are not what they used to be since the PSW(Post study work visa) has ended. But I suggest people get the chip off of their shoulders. Stop thinking that any country out there owes you a job. I certainly did not come here with that sort of attitude. The LSE did not force me to take up this Masters, I knew the risks all too well. I came anyway. What I did do was give it my best shot. I did not go out partying every night. I did not fly back to my parents at the drop of a hat. I worked on my applications, worked on my interviews, I got lots of rejections, lots of interviews and with every rejection I picked myself back up again and tried harder.

In my four years here I couldn’t ask for more. As a woman the freedom this city gives you is amazing. In all those years I’ve never been groped or inappropriately touched even once. I have never faced a hint of racism and neither have any of my friends from India. They all love it here and although most went back, they went back with fond memories and made friends the world over. My family lives in New York and I’d pick London over New York any day of the week. My sister who’s a New Yorker even admits the same when it comes to things like safety and public transport.

I also think that most non EU students get swept up in the glitz and glamour of London. When I was at uni, the same people who went back and cried about racism and not being given jobs were the ones I saw partying every night in a new nightclub and spending over a £100 without thinking about the fact that they have a massive loan to pay off. I knew a girl from India whose parents took out a huge loan to send her to the LSE. Even though I offered to help her find a job, she refused and was out partying with her boyfriend and friends every night, she decided to stay in the most expensive area in London where rents are as high as £2k for a room and when she went back she blamed racism even though I never saw her lift a finger to find a job. She only started applying during her last month in the UK. She wasn’t the only one who was like that, most were like her.

People who wanted to find jobs, found them. They planned, they worked hard, they attended interviews throughout the year. They basically gave it their best and today they’re in one of the best cities in the world. I’m set to move to Germany eventually because my boyfriend’s German and we’ve decided to marry and settle there. But I dread everyday when the time comes to leave this amazing wonderful country and its people. No country on earth is more tolerant towards different people than this one. I can guarantee you that as someone who has travelled all three continents extensively.
