80% Engineering Graduates from 2015 in India not Employable

More than 1.5 million engineering graduates pass out every year in India from 3,345 colleges, Andhra Pradesh alone has close to 700 colleges. What it does is increases the probability of 20-30% students remaining unemployed and those who are able to find the employment as well get such a low starting salary of INR 12,000-15,000.  Considering the amount of money students spend on the tuition fees, the return of investment is not as high.

Coming from an engineering background myself, I understand what below par colleges does to a student. The low-quality education from professors or lecturers who have just as much experience of teaching as you have of engineering. Apart from the lack of quality education; lack of imparting industrial, professional, and practical skills is another major reason why a large number of students remain unemployed after the graduation.

In terms of percentage, Delhi and Bengaluru produces the highest number of employable engineers. Bengaluru ‒ an IT hub, has a high demand for Computer and IT engineers, and yet plenty of students remain unemployed there as well.

The employment becomes even more difficult for graduates from average colleges or below par colleges. On the other hand, IIT and NIIT graduates find employment relatively easier. But the tough  admission criteria and a limited number of seats, and reservations make it impossible for many students to grab a seat in these top institutes, and they end up going to an average college.

This lack of quality education compels students to look for opportunities to study abroad in UK or US ‒ two major destinations among Indian students going to study abroad. The recent trend has also seen Indian students going to study in Australia, due to post study visa options, but many students find it difficult to find employment there suitable for their education.

Many prospective students question the job opportunities in the UK after graduation and post graduation, the employment rate in the UK is second highest according to a study, which makes it a good destination for Indian students to study abroad.
